The following students have read for 125 nights this year:

The following students have read for 150 nights this year:

Maryam S, Sirat.

We have focused on the letters p, i, l, j, u and v, learning the sounds and words that begin with these sounds. The students have become good at the soundwaves chant and know the actions and sounds from the video. We have also made various letter crafts to help us remember the sounds.

As well as these letters, we also looked at diagraphs th, sh, ch, wh, ph. We have watched Happy Cheese Sounds videos, listed words we know that contain these sounds, sorted them into groups, and used them in our sentence writing.

We’ve had a big focus on writing independently this term in trying to write our own ideas. We have written in our journals as well as using certain pictures as inspiration or certain words. We have focused on our writing goals:

We are writing this term on dotted thirds and trying to attempt to get our letters to sit in the right spot on the lines.

In Maths, we have worked a lot on addition to 10, extension to 20. We used addition strategies like number lines, number bonds to 10 and counting on from the bigger numbers. We have learnt number order to 30 and practised number patterns, counting forwards and backwards by 1’s or 2’s. We focused on numbers that come before or after a set number.

We have spent time learning about mass, that is, describing things that are heavy or light and deciding which item is heavier or lighter. We reviewed time and the days of the week and the months of the year which we learnt about during our weather unit in Science.

In Science, our first unit was on weather, types of weather and weather symbols. As well, the seasons of the year and which months for which season. We spent a lot of time on how we should be dressed for certain weather and how the seasons are different. Our classes’ favorite activity in this unit was dress bears for different seasons, the foundation students really enjoyed this.

Our other Science unit this term was on materials and we looked at what things are made of and how we could describe them, rough, smooth, soft, hard, heavy, light. We used materials to make things including using wool to make friendship bands.

In Health, we focused on emotions and how we feel when things happen and how we should react, what we can do in different scenarios. We talked about bullying, what it is and what to do if it happens to us or we see it happening. Our focus mainly was treating each other kindly.

In P.E., we focused on balancing and we danced and the students all performed a dance showing the life cycle of a caterpillar, a dance that they made up themselves. The students really enjoyed going to gymnastics.

During Book Week, we read from the “Aliens Love Underpants” series, and this inspired a writing task from which we wrote about the aliens, and we also designed our own undies. I was happy to see so many from our class dress up and take ideas from a book and participate in the Book Week parade.

In Art, we have been making model foods. We have made ice creams, donuts, corn and cupcakes by using lots of different techniques. The corn origami was tricky but everyone succeeded with help and everyone loved making cupcakes out of clay.

For Father’s Day we decorated and wrote our own cards and messages for dad. We decorated a storage tin and also wrote a sentence in our writing books which we then typed up in the computer lab.

In ICT, we worked with Microsoft Word typing sentences, changing the font size and color. We used the shapes tools to draw pictures and tried to insert pictures. The students have improved at typing in their own passwords in order to access computers and Reading Eggs.
